What is a meme? Pronounced "MEEM", a meme is a type of media, usually with an image and a catchphrase, that spreads quickly (goes viral) on the internet.
A few examples you may have seen recently are:
Woman yelling at cat
Spider-man pointing at Spider-man
Change my mind

You may have seen some of those examples before. The humor in memes is usually in the juxtaposition of the imagery with the text. So if you wanted to make a Smash Bros meme, you could start with an image from the game, or start with a different image and relate the text with gameplay. The term "meme" was first coined by Richard Dawkins, referring to how ideas mutate and evolve over time (memetics). Here are a few "mutations" of the meme examples mentioned above.
What are some of the characteristics of a good meme?
Know Your Audience - Like all other media, you have to know your audience. Memes will play to different humors and generations. While many formats are popular, their content may hit some groups differently. If you want to know how to make a niche meme, it’s based on your audience.
Make it Relatable - Memes are best when they are relatable, reference pop culture, and have a great image to go along with the caption. Popular memes tend to have a memorable characteristic, whether it’s the facial expression, situation, or person involved.
Use a Unique Photo - If you have great candid shots of someone making a silly face, an animal wearing a costume or striking an unusual pose, or if you like to draw funny looking cartoon characters, you are off to a good start.
Add Some Text - Adding a funny quip or a well-known quote on top of the image drives the joke. (This type of meme is called an ‘image macro’.)
